Measuring for Outside Mount
Before you order your Serena Shades you’ll need to measure your window. In this video, we’ll show you how to measure for a shade mounted outside on the window frame as well as outside above the frame. Following these easy measuring guidelines will help ensure you’ll order the proper size shade for your window.
Before you begin, consider the following:
- Do you want to cover up the trim?
- Do you want some of the trim exposed, and if so, how much?
- How much light do you want filtering through the left and right sides of the shade? The wider shade, the smaller the light gap.
- Do you want the bottom rail to extend past the windowsill? If so, will it catch on the sill as the shade is lowered?
If you’re going to mount your shade on the outside of the window frame, simply measure the frame vertically from the top trim to where you want the bottom of the shade to hang. Then measure horizontally at the middle of the frame from trim to trim. Round each of those numbers up to the nearest 1/8th of an inch, then write them down as order height and order width.
If you’re going to mount the shade above the window frame, you’ll need to measure the frame vertically at the middle of the frame from the top trim to where you want the bottom of the shade to hang. Then measure horizontally at the middle of the frame from trim to trim, and round up to the nearest 1/8th inch. You’ll also need to measure how many inches above the frame you want to mount the shade and add that measurement to the frame height in order to get the “order height” for the shade, and round up to the nearest 1/8th inch. (Typically this is about 3 inches.)
